A descendent of pioneering farm families in Ontario’s Halton County, I studied journalism at Ottawa’s Carleton University, worked as a reporter, and discovered I’d rather make hay when the sun shines.
Now, with my wife, Susan, and our two sons, we raise sheep, cattle, and pigs on 120 acres. Trying to farm and be a freelance writer is a bad idea, but I still write the regular pasture column for Small Farm Canada magazine, and scribble for publications including Cottage Life, Canadian Geographic, ON nature and The Ontario Farmer. Along the way I’ve been nominated for 27 National Magazine Awards, won six individual National Magazine Awards, and earned additional hardware for agricultural and science journalism. (You can see some of those stories by plugging my name into the National Magazine Awards searchable archive.) I’m also a member of the Canadian Farm Writers Federation and the Canadian Science Writers Association.
